The Limestone Coast Landscape Board has been holding a two-day outdoor education camp on Country in the Limestone Coast for the last twelve years as part of the Young Environmental Leaders Program.
Open to students in years 5 and 6 the Young Environmental Leader Program provides students an opportunity to gain knowledge of their local landscape, share ideas and network with students from other schools.
Damien Bickley, Limestone Coast Landscape Board Educator said, “It might have been wet and windy this year, but “wonderful” still describes our annual Earthkeeper’s Camp held at the Naracoorte Caves!
“The focus of the camp is to explore the landscape and learn about the interconnectivity of all living things. Reconnecting with the environment allows students the opportunity to fully embrace the local landscape.”
“Developing a sense of connectedness to nature builds students’ compassion, resilience and lifelong environmental awareness.” Damien commented.
The collaborative environment encourages teamwork and communication, providing the opportunity to connect with peers who have a shared passion for caring for our landscape. Students participate in many group activities on the camp to develop their knowledge and foster a deeper understanding of everyday sustainable practices they can undertake to improve our local landscape.
Many children across the Limestone Coast have now participated in the camp, which proves that even in this highly digital world young people are still developing a deep love and connection to the environment. Students love being able to explore textures and colours and all of natures treasures, with no access to devices over the two days it is wonderful to see them reconnecting.
