A chance to immerse themselves in nature and learn about how all living things are connected, students loved exploring the local landscape at the annual Earthkeepers camp earlier this month.
A chance to immerse themselves in nature and learn about how all living things are connected, students loved exploring the local landscape at the annual Earthkeepers camp earlier this month. The Limestone Coast Landscape Board camp focuses on the importance of caring for our environment and learning about ways to contribute to a sustainable future.
Approximately 60 enthusiastic students embraced the elements as they undertook a variety of outdoor activities at the Naracoorte Caves. Hiking trails, outdoor caves, magic nature spots, camp fires and quiz nights were all part of the adventure.
Limestone Coast Landscape Board Educator, Mel Holtz, said, "Students enjoy many aspects of the camp and learning how to care for the environment, but the highlight is seeing the students spend so much time in nature and the absolute joy on their faces."
"The magic spot activity allows all students time to be present in the moment and utilise their senses to immerse themselves in the landscape around them. Students find a deeper appreciation for the world around them."
Feedback from students highlighted the importance of being out in nature and exploring the world around us. The magic spot activity was a crowd favourite as it creates a sense of calm and connecting with nature in the already busy world around us, taking a minute to pause and appreciate the world. Exploring the sights, sounds and smells of the chose magic spot creates a sense of wonder amongst the students.
"We really enjoyed learning about mother nature and how all living things are connected. It is really important that we respect our planet. Spending time in our magic spot made us feel calm and grounded," students from Glenburnie Primary School commented.
The Young Environmental Leaders Program focusses on teaching students about the importance of caring for our environment and the ways they can contribute to a sustainable future. Being able to experience the camp with other like-minded peers from around the Limestone Coast provides students a chance to share in their passion for respecting the landscape around them.
The Limestone Coast Landscape Board Education Team supports landscape education in the region with a variety of programs that support the Australian Curriculum.
