The Limestone Coast Landscape Board’s newest youth environmental leadership program is officially underway. Launched as a pilot program in 2026, the Conservation Crew of the Limestone Coast brings together five passionate young environmental advocates committed to creating positive change across the region.
As a natural progression from the Limestone Coast Landscape Board’s education initiatives, including the Young Environmental Leaders Program (YELP) and the Limestone Coast Youth Environment Council (LCYEC), this program offers young people aged 15 to 18 the opportunity to deepen their learning.
Damien Bickley, Landscape Educator with the Limestone Coast Landscape Board, said the program empowers young people to turn their passion for the environment into meaningful action.
"The Conservation Crew provides an opportunity for young people to build their leadership skills, connect with like-minded organisations and take practical action on environmental issues that matter to them," Damien said.
"We know young people in the Limestone Coast care deeply about the future of our landscapes. This program gives them the confidence, networks and opportunities to make a genuine contribution to their communities."
The group has already participated in two forums this year, visiting a range of conservation sites across the region, including Lake Hawdon, Beachport Conservation Park and Greenrise Arboretum. The forums have featured expert presentations, landscape immersion experiences, native wildlife education, revegetation activities and opportunities to connect with environmental professionals and community leaders. Participants have also met other young people creating positive change in their communities, highlighting the importance of youth voice and advocacy.
Through these experiences, crew members have developed a deeper understanding of the Limestone Coast's unique landscapes and feel empowered to pursue their environmental interests and make a lasting impact in their communities.
Conservation Crew of the Limestone Coast member Maya Boyington said, “It is so great to be part of this new group. We have had the chance to go to so many cool places and meet inspiring people. We all get on really well and support each other to take action on behalf of the environment. I'm really looking forward to our upcoming events and spending more time with the Conservation Crew.”
The group is now preparing for its third forum of the year, a two-day camp to the Coorong where members will learn more about one of South Australia's most significant and diverse natural environments.
In addition, the Conservation Crew is busy planning activities for the community as part of the upcoming Walk the Wetland event during the October school holidays. Community members are encouraged to visit Lions Park, Port MacDonnell, on 9 October to meet the crew, hear about their experiences throughout the year and get involved in environmental activities.
The Conservation Crew is also seeking partnerships with local environmental organisations and community groups to further expand its impact across the Limestone Coast.
