The Limestone Coast Landscape Board invites farmers and land managers to attend a practical workshop in Tintinara to ‘dig deeper’ and better learn to look at their soil profile at depth and gain a greater understanding of what is happening throughout the entire soil profile, rather than focusing solely on the top 0-10 centimetres of soil.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to explore soil pits more than a metre deep to uncover practical ways to improve productivity, manage nutrients and build healthier sandy soils. Additionally, participants will receive updates of local Veldt grass nutrition demonstration trials, gain insights into nutrient and fertiliser management for productive pastures and explore organic soil amendments that may assist.

Led by Felicity Turner and Dr Mel Fraser, working together as Sunlight Soil Strategists, the workshop will take participants on a journey beneath the surface, starting at the Veldt grass nutrition trial site before proceeding to the much-anticipated soil pit demonstration. The day will finish at a second demonstration site near Lake Ellen, where landholders will have the chance to observe a series of soil cores from across the demonstration trial to compare soil conditions and management approaches across different properties.

Nick Bassett with the Limestone Coast Landscape Board emphasised the great opportunity presented by the soil pit demonstration.

“This workshop and farm walk is a great opportunity for landholders to dig a bit deeper into our sandy soils and step into a soil pit with Dr Mel Fraser to better understand our constraints to productivity and pasture growth,” he said.

“And if past experiences are anything to go by, I think landholders will really ‘dig’ the experience”, he said with a smile.
