Empowered young people across the region are turning passion into action, leading environmental change through the Limestone Coast Landscape Board program.
With a team of 18 passionate students from years 7 to 10, the LCYEC has embraced a year of hands-on learning, leadership and adventure.
Highlights included presenting alongside environmental experts at the Bay Festival in Port MacDonnell at the start of the year. This was then followed up by an unforgettable overnight learning experience in Warrnambool. The LCYEC members met with Deakin University seaweed researchers to explore cutting-edge seaweed and seagrass science.
With a variety of activities during the year building confidence and leadership skills, the team hosted a free screening of Future Council by Damon Gameau, inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders to make positive change.
The Voice of Youth survey conducted by the team, provided insight to the Limestone Coast Landscape Board development of the upcoming regional landscape plan. This was a pivotal piece of work ensuring young people’s opinions were put forward.
Limestone Coast Landscape Board Educator, Damien Bickley said “The LCYEC have gained significant traction this year, with so many great opportunities coming their way. Sharing the passion for the environment and building up their confidence to share their opinions with the community has been very rewarding.”
Maya, who has been a part of the LCYEC since its inception in 2022 said, “Being a part of the LCYEC makes you feel like you can really make a difference, visiting Deakin University’s Warrnambool campus was a highlight. I love being part of such an amazing group of people, who share my passion for the environment.”
The Limestone Coast Youth Environment Council is proof that young people have powerful voices, bold ideas and a vital role to play in protecting our local landscape.
