Members of the Limestone Coast Youth Environment Council (LCYEC), an initiative of the Limestone Coast Landscape Board, recently explored marine science during an inspiring visit to Deakin University’s Warrnambool campus.
The LCYEC program aims to empower young people with leadership skills and hands-on environmental experiences, helping build the next generation of leaders and advocates championing our landscape.
Hosted by Deakin’s School of Life and Environmental Sciences, the young environmental leaders were welcomed by marine researchers Dr. Alecia Bellgrove and Zoe Britten, who provided an engaging, behind-the-scenes tour of the university’s world-class marine science facilities.
Damien Bickley from the Limestone Coast Landscape Board commented, “This visit highlighted future education pathways and encouraged the students to consider how their passion for the environment could evolve into careers in science, research or conservation. Providing this opportunity gave a valuable insight into life after high school for these students.”
The students explored laboratories, research spaces, and technology hubs, gaining insights into marine research and environmental challenges facing our coastlines and oceans. They were introduced to Deakin’s extensive seaweed archives and even assisted in cataloguing some of the samples – a hands-on activity that connected science with real-world application.
"I loved going to Deakin, it was amazing to see all the technology and research at the facilities. It really opened my eyes to what’s possible if you study marine science," said Josh.
