The Limestone Coast Landscape Board is calling on landholders in Mount Gambier, Millicent, Naracoorte and surrounding areas to take coordinated action as wild rabbit numbers continue to rise across the region.
Recent community reports indicate a noticeable increase in rabbit activity in urban areas, prompting the Limestone Coast Landscape Board to reactivate its urban rabbit control program. The program will again offer discounted Pindone bait collection days for eligible property owners in targeted urban areas in February 2026.
“Last year we had an excellent response from the community, and we need that momentum to continue”, said Lizzie Doyle, Team Leader for Southern Landscape Operations. “These bait collection days provide landholders with another effective tool to help manage rabbit numbers on their properties”.
Wild rabbits cause significant damage to gardens, landscaping, lawns, footpaths and infrastructure. Under ideal conditions, a single breeding pair can produce up to 180 offspring in just 18 months, and last year’s mild winter has contributed to a sharp increase in rabbit populations across Mount Gambier, Millicent and Naracoorte.
Under the Landscape South Australia Act 2019, property owners are responsible for managing wild rabbits on their land. The Limestone Coast Landscape Board has written to landholders in identified hotspot areas, encouraging them to undertake control measures.
Ms. Doyle emphasised the importance of coordinated action, noting that rabbits move freely across property boundaries.
“When neighbouring landholders act together within a short timeframe, the chances of achieving meaningful population reduction and minimising reinvasion are greatly improved”, she said.
Discounted Pindone bait will be available from the Limestone Coast Landscape Board depots in Millicent, Mount Gambier and Naracoorte.
Property owners should register their interest to ensure availability on (08) 8429 7550.
